My motion design project I measured my outcomes based on key criteria like effective use of motion principles, storytelling clarity, visual cohesion, and technical execution.

I drew on a previous student’s project - Particularly the Juno Project - I sought to create a visually appealing and conceptually coherent title sequence that communicates tone, rhythm and character.

The project’s ability to convey mood and narrative tone through minimalistic design choices. Since being inspired by the Juno example as it was simple and clever in its use of motion (e.g., rotating ‘o’ in “Juno”), I used a disco ball icon to function as both a narrative symbol and a transitional device.

This element was successful in particular, as it anchored the motions and gave the sequence a playful tone, while also guiding the viewer’s eye fluidly from one frame to the next. This follows the principle of primary motion, where each movement serves as a deliberate narrative and visual function.

The use of icons – like the wine bottle, phone receiver, palm trees, and wedding topper — helped strengthen the visual storytelling and established a symbolic language that supports each cast member’s character. Inspired by the Tic Tac motif in Juno, these objects created a more immersive viewing experience. The alignment between text and iconography applied visual hierarchy and association effectively.

From a technical standpoint, I successfully employed keyframe animation and easing techniques in Adobe After Effects to bring fluidity and life to the motion. For example, the fade in/fade out applied to the cast list ensured a soft rhythm and avoided jarring cuts, enhancing viewer engagement [Insert Screenshot 3: Keyframe opacity graph or timeline].

The dragging motion of the main title at the start was another highlight, creating a sense of anticipation. This is after the principle of anticipation in motion design, subtly preparing the viewer for what's to come. It was effective in establishing pacing early on.

While the project met many of the criteria successfully, there are some parts that could be refined. One area of improvement would be timing and pacing — especially between transitions. There are a few moments, transitions are slightly rushed, which interrupted the otherwise smooth rhythm of the sequence. Slowing down some of the icon-to-text movements or adding brief holds between sections could improve legibility and pacing.

Another aspect is to develop contrast and layering. In some frames, the icon and text were too similar in scale or positioning, leading to a visual flattening that made it harder to distinguish hierarchy at a glance. Introducing a more varied scale, layering depth, or subtle shadows could help guide the viewer’s layering depth, or subtle shadows could help guide the viewer's attention more clearly.

Finally, even though the disco ball was successful as a transitional device, its motion could be more nuanced. At times, its rotation felt too mechanical or repetitive. Adding more variation – such as changes in scale, lighting shimmer, or rotational speed– could enhance the realism and keep the viewer engaged.

Overall, I would consider my project a success in applying motion design principles and Adobe After Effects techniques. The project demonstrates clear storytelling, used graphic design fundamentals effectively, and incorporated motion to enhance tone and rhythm. The use of iconography tied into the film’s narrative in a meaningful way, and the transitions supported a cohesive visual language. With further refinement in pacing, contrast, and motion nuance, the piece could reach an even higher level of polish and sophistication.

This project was not only a strong learning experience but also a stepping stone into growing my confidence with animation and motion storytelling.
